A Stranger Delivers a Letter - A Living Letter

As a youngster I grew up in a poor rural area, but by 1985 I was a reasonably happy person. After all, I was a young man gainfully employed at a local creamery in Eldoret, Kenya. What could be better? Then one day in 1985, as I walked along a busy street, a person turned to me and said, "You look familiar." I'd never seen this person before, but soon we were having a conversation that would change my life forever. As we walked along the stranger told me the simple story of Jesus and how he had come to save me. It was as if this person was a living letter from Jesus addressed to me. How fitting that I should kneel on the street right out in front of the post office where I gave my life to Christ.

A Brand New Chapter

My new life in Christ was exhilarating. I had to know everything about my new faith, but there weren't enough hours in the day to immerse myself in Scripture and the writings of the great preachers while working at the creamery. God was leading me into ministry and I had to follow, even though it meant leaving a good job. Soon I was working at my new church as an errand runner. The pastor mentored me and put me in charge of my favorite place - the church library! While taking good care of the books, I read as many of them as I could. In between work I was free to study, to search the Scriptures, and to ask God for direction in my new life.

A Continuing Faith Adventure

In 1998, my wife and I sensed God's leading to begin a church plant in Eldoret, Kenya. Today, I serve as its Senior Pastor. Grace Life Centre is a center for training and discipleship. As we've grown we see new opportunities all around us. So many have never received that letter from Christ that a friend delivered to me.

Missionaries coming to us are important, as they teach and train persons in our church to be living letters for Jesus. As leaders are raised here, our vision is for a local Bible school to help continue in this effort.
